First 90 Days at a New Job How to Make a Strong Start

The impressions you make, relationships you build, and credibility you establish in the first 90 days are remarkably sticky. Here's how to use them well.

Days 1-30: Listen and Learn

Your job in the first month is not to solve problems — it's to understand them. Ask questions. Learn how decisions actually get made. Understand who the informal influencers are. Take notes on everything.

Build Relationships Intentionally

Schedule one-on-ones with every person on your immediate team in the first two weeks. Ask: "What should I know about this team?" and "What's most important to you in how we work together?"

Days 31-60: Start Contributing

Look for a quick win: a process improvement, a tool that saves time, a problem you can solve in a week. Visible early wins build credibility fast.

Days 61-90: Drive and Deliver

By day 90, have: a clear understanding of your priorities, established relationships, at least one visible contribution, and a 6-month plan to present to your manager.

What to Avoid

  • Don't come in telling everyone how things were done at your last company.
  • Don't skip team social events — relationships built early pay dividends for years.
  • Don't try to prove you're the smartest person in the room.
