How to Ask for a Promotion and Actually Get It

Most people believe promotions are given to the hardest workers. In reality, promotions go to people who make their value visible and ask at the right time in the right way.

Build the Case Before You Ask

Spend 3-6 months building the evidence file. Document your achievements with numbers. Take on responsibilities that belong to the level above you. By the time you ask, you should already be doing the job you want the title for.

Understand What the Next Level Requires

Have an explicit conversation with your manager: "What would I need to demonstrate to be considered for the next level?" Then go demonstrate it.

Ask at the Right Time

  • Best: After a major win, during performance reviews, when you've taken on more responsibility.
  • Worst: During a company layoff, after a mistake, when your manager is stressed.

How to Frame the Ask

"I've been reflecting on my contributions and I'd like to discuss my path to [next role]. Based on [specific achievements], I believe I've been operating at or above the next level. Can we discuss what a promotion timeline might look like?"

If They Say No

Ask specifically: "What would I need to accomplish in the next 6 months to be ready?" Get it in writing. If the answer keeps changing, it may be time to look externally.
