While most people focus on the H-1B lottery, Canadians and Mexicans have access to one of the most underrated work authorization options: the TN visa.
What Is the TN Visa?
The TN visa allows Canadian and Mexican professionals to work in the US in specific professional occupations under USMCA. Unlike the H-1B, there is no annual cap, no lottery, and no sponsor-specific petition required for Canadians.
Who Qualifies?
The TN covers a specific list of professions: accountants, engineers, computer systems analysts, scientists, lawyers, teachers, economists, mathematicians, pharmacists, and more.
Canadian vs Mexican Process
- Canadians: Apply directly at the US border or pre-clearance airport with your job offer letter and degree. Remarkably simple.
- Mexicans: Must apply at a US embassy or consulate in Mexico. Cap-free but more similar to a standard visa application.
Duration
TN status is granted for up to 3 years and can be renewed indefinitely in 3-year increments. Many professionals maintain TN status for 10+ years.
