The STEM OPT extension is one of the most valuable assets for STEM graduates in the US. Here's everything you need to know.
Who Qualifies?
- F-1 visa on valid post-completion OPT.
- Degree in a STEM field from a US institution.
- Job offer from an E-Verify enrolled employer.
- Role directly related to your STEM degree.
The E-Verify Requirement
Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify. This is a firm requirement with no exceptions. Most large companies are enrolled; smaller ones may not be.
Application Timeline
- Apply at least 90 days before your current OPT expires.
- Processing typically takes 3-5 months — apply early.
- Applying before expiration gives you a 180-day cap gap extension while pending.
Reporting Requirements
Report to your DSO every 6 months to confirm your employment status. Set calendar reminders — failing to do so can invalidate your STEM OPT.
Changing Jobs
You can change employers on STEM OPT, but update your I-983 and report the change to your DSO within 10 days. Your new employer must also be E-Verify enrolled.
